Shahid Afridi has announced his resignation as chief selector of Pakistan’s national team

Shahid Afridi has announced his resignation as chief selector of Pakistan’s national team. He was appointed in May 2018 and is the first Pakistani cricketer to be appointed chief selector.

He started his playing career with them when he made his debut against England in 1992. He was selected for the 1996 World Cup squad but had to retire due to injury before he could play any matches for Pakistan during that tournament.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has said Shahid Afridi will continue to be a part of the board as director cricket operations until his duties on that front are completed.

“Shahid Afridi will continue serving as Director Cricket Operations,” Sethi said in a release issued on Friday. “He has informed me that he cannot continue in this role due to personal reasons.”

He also expressed gratitude towards the PCB for giving him an opportunity to play such a role in cricket.

The board has yet to decide on his replacement. “Shahid will continue as director cricket operations until his duties are completed,” said a PCB source. He will not be a selector in the future but will stay on board as director cricket operations until the time his duties on that front are completed.

The national selectors have already picked up Azhar Khan from working as assistant coach at Shoaib Malik’s academy in Lahore to replace Afridi who quit after completing two years in charge of Pakistan’s national selection panel which includes former Test cricketers Mohammad Yousuf and Javed Miandad among others
