Memory Care vs. Nursing Home

According to one study, more than 65 million people are caring for someone who is disabled or elderly.

If you’re one of those people, it might be getting too much to handle. This is when you can turn to some other kind of facility, like memory care or a nursing home.

But what’s the difference between memory care vs nursing home. Keep reading to find out!

Memory Care

Memory care helps to provide around-the-clock care especially for people who have memory loss. The people who work at these facilities focus on having training on how to take care of dementia patients.

They’re also trained on how to deal with certain issues like any hallucinations, wandering, confusion, aggressive behavior, and memory loss.

Nursing Home

If someone is in a nursing home, they likely have a serious or chronic issue that needs to be taken care of. The staff will make sure that they take care of their patients all around the clock and supervise them.

There are two different types of care: short-term and long-term.

If you choose short-term, this is mostly for people who only need it for a short amount of time. This is for people who could be recovering from an acute injury, illness, or surgery.

For people who are in long-term care, they likely have a disorder that will be for the rest of their life. This is for things like terminal illnesses or memory disorders.

Nursing homes will also take care of them each day and provide medical services like:

  • Wound care
  • Manage medications
  • IVs
  • Therapy
  • Respiratory care
  • Occupational or physical therapy

However, before a resident can move into a nursing home, they’ll have to have a prescription from their doctor saying that they’re qualified too.

Differences

There are a few differences when it comes down to choosing retirement communities, like assisted living memory care vs nursing home.

Some of those differences include the cost and how many residents they have.

Cost

The cost of memory care for one month is about $5,000, although this will depend on the facilities you choose.

Where you live can also determine how expensive it is. In some regions, it could cost up to $8,000.

However, a nursing home is even more expensive at around $7,000 for a month. This could go up to $15,000 a month depending on where you live.

Number of Residents

In a memory care facility, the smaller places will normally be no more than twenty-five people. However, a larger place can hold up to one hundred residents, but that’s rare.

On the other hand, a nursing home will have anywhere between fifty to two hundred residents in their place.
