In the modern era of digital technology, the majority of modern appliances such as laptops, smartphones, Internet devices, and other connected systems cannot operate without the performance of one essential ingredient, namely electricity.

The flow of power and electricity into our smart homes and other smart buildings would not be possible without the functions of power transformers. So, what is the role of a power transformer and why is it essential in the modern world? Read more to find out.

What Is A Power Transformer?

Like any other transformer, a power transformer is a device comprising of an electromagnetic core and a coil wrapper that modifies the voltage and current of the electric power that flows through it. In other words, a power transformer can either increase or reduce the level of voltage or current in an AC circuit.

Different from other transformers, a power transformer is intended to handle high voltage inputs and can function at 100% efficiency (as compared to 60-70% range for other transformers). Typical power transformers can manage high voltages in the range of 33 to 400 kV. In addition to this, power transformers make use of the disc-type of winding, which links separate disc windings in a series, through outer and inner cross-overs.

The Role of Power Transformers in The Modern World

Whether it is to provide light in our homes or keep the refrigerator on, the modern world needs a consistent and safe flow of electricity into residential or commercial establishments. Power transformers, in association with distribution transformers, enable the transmission of electricity to any location. Power transformers receive electricity at extremely high voltages, which is stepped-down by the transformer to lower voltage levels that can be distributed through the distribution transformers to individual residential or commercial units. Lower voltage levels (or higher current) are ideal for the functioning of the electrical appliances that we use.

Additional use of power transformers takes place at power generating stations, which generates electricity for a large city. Transformers facilitate in stepping-up the generated power to make sure that the entire city receives electricity. Without the performance of power transformers, power generated in the power stations would not be adequate for the entire city.

Depending on their function, modern appliances have different needs of voltage, which is supplied to them by the power transformers. Also, power transformers confine the electrical device from the main power supply, therefore protecting them from any damage or risk. Transformer protection is obviously vital as well.
